Design


QSIL Ceramics is a manufacturer of customer-specific components based on the customers' drawings. QSIL Ceramics has appropriate design programs thus ensuring co-operation. The data can be exchanged with the customer through the common interfaces (dwg, step, iges).

The support provided by QSIL Ceramics is intended to ensure a design in line with the ceramics requirements. In our understanding, this means a reliable and cost-efficient realization of the function and requires an open communication between the partners.

Some fundamentals need to be observed in order to achieve a design in line with the ceramics requirements:

  • Edges – Due to its brittle and hard behavior, ceramics easily tends towards edge chippings. Here, obtuse angles constitute an advantage. Phases ranging from 0.3 ... 0.5x45° have established as the common solution for a lot of applications.
  • Tolerance – The ceramic manufacturing process comprises a multitude of production steps. The production tolerances of the individual process steps sum up to a real tolerance well illustrated by the standard DIN 40680-m for "as fired" components. Smaller tolerances can be adjusted through additional production steps (hard machining).
  • Surfaces – Surfaces greatly depend on the material used. Due to the ceramic crystal structure, they cannot directly be compared with metal surfaces. As a rule, unprocessed surfaces are described by Ra-1.6µm. Depending on the material and the grinding process, ground surfaces typically range between   Ra 0.6 ... 1.2µm. Polished surfaces also depend on the material and can be realized by means of a polishing process between Ra 0.03 ... 0,3µm.

 

Production restrictions:

  • Depending on the material used in the sintering process, ceramics are subject to a shrinkage from 16 to 28%. This effect needs to be taken into account in the shape and in particular the wall thicknesses.
  • Ceramics as a wear-resistant material also offer resistance in processing. This is the reason why sharp inner edges cannot be produced due to the wear at the tool. However, sharp junctions should generally be avoided in ceramic production.
